Adept does not ask for password!

Not sure where to post this but after a fairly successful upgrade to Gutsy things are turning for the worse.

    1. Adept doesn't ask for a password upon opening. Surely this is a mistake? Whilst opening 2 Adept buttons appear on the taskbar briefly before 1 disappears. . Adept also has my normal appearance settings, whereas it used to have the default root appearance.

    2. Now I'm posting from Windows because my network hardware does not exist according to Knetworkmanager. I was able to re-enable both wireless and wired in System Settings, but this did not change the way knetworkmanager was behaving.

I've also now got probs with dolphin saying that it can't mount my external HD because HAL isn't running.

I really need to get to the bottom of this. Any help would be greatly appreciared. Maybe I can even avoid a reinstall!

That problem with Adept has been around for quite some time. I tried a couple of the fixes, but they were about as bad as the problem. I think that if you try adept again while the two adepts are on the taskbar, it will go. Otherwise, try running it from a command prompt.

I noticed this too, a couple of times. Since the last updates (yesterday), it seems to be reliably requiring a password. I haven't noticed anything about Adept "appearances" -- looks pretty much the same as it used to. Get your updates, reboot your system, and then check it again.

Knetwork manager is famous mainly for its bugs :P

Can you open System Settings>Network and take care of your settings there?

[RANT] Why the hell does Linux need ANOTHER FILE MANAGER -- AREN'T 20 ENOUGH? [/rant]

This is a fairly widely-noticed issue with Dolphin:

I assume it will be fixed in the near future. Meanwhile, there are many Linux file managers that work, including Konqueror.

      Unfortunately, re-installing doesn't fix bugs. :P

Re: Adept does not ask for password!

Thanks for the help. Before blaming Dolphin it appears like my tweaking caused some of these problems...

        Adept
Still allowing me to do stuff on occassions with no password.

        Dolphin
HAL wasn't starting at boot because I had changed CONCURRENCY=none to CONCURRENCY=shell in /etc/init.d

This speed tweak worked in Edgy and Feisty but Gutsy no like.

        Networking
Even though HAL is now running from boot, Knetworkmanager still says there are no wireless devices present, so no updates for me.

Used System Settings to reactivate ethernet and wireless card (Intel). It says theye are activated but Knetworkmanager still won't detect anything.
Looking at Ksyslog, it appears that kernel, dchp and NetworkManager are doing 'things' in the background it just aint working.

Would be great if someone can help me get back to square 1 with networking. I can post logs if that would help.

Only other changes I made to system prior to these problems was installing a pacakage called AcetoneISO2 and it's dependencies.

I did tweak sysctl file for networking but have restored a backed-up version of the original file.

        Many thanks,

        P

You will find, that KNetworkManger isn't the end-all of network managers, especially for wireless. Search the forum on wireless problems and knetworkmanager. Try using KWiFiManager instead.

Re: Adept does not ask for password!

Adept might not ask for a password in Gutsy sometimes because kdesu now remembers passwords for a given amount of time, just like sudo. So if you have used sudo or kdesu recently, kdesu remembers that you've used it and will not ask you for the password. In short, kdesu now works like sudo.
