    BitTorrent MD5SUM? DVD naming confusion.

I am right now downloading the DVD for Gutsy using BitTorrent. I am understandably a bit wary of what I am getting and wish to verify using MD5 that I have the right image bits once the download is finished.

The name of the DVD image file for the BitTorrent stream at http://kubuntu.org/download.php is kubuntu-7.10-dvd-i386.iso where the name of the downloadable image itself at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/dvd/current/ is gutsy-dvd-i386.iso . CDImage provides MD5SUM files but using the "gutsy" name as the start of the filename for the hashes.

Is kubuntu-7.10-dvd-i386.iso the same as gutsy-dvd-i386.iso and if I spend 12 hours downloading the kubuntu version, will I have the right hash by using the "gutsy*" hashes?

I just noticed that there is a BitTorrent for the "gutsy*" dvd as well, so I will probably end up using that just to be safe. The problem that I notice while downloading is that there seem to not be as many peers.

    Thanks for any advice.

Different mirrors may choose to name the .iso files they maintain differently. I'd be concerned as to the one at cdimages site, but if the date stamp on it is the official release date for Gutsy final then I'd say you're okay. If in doubt, download from the kubuntu.org site.

I would assume the md5sums for Ubuntu and Kubuntu DVD images would be different, since they contain different data.

So, I'm also wondering what the md5sum for the Kubuntu 7.10 DVD image should be. I got done torrenting (I'm still seeding, though ). The md5sum I have is 8703b7773f717e171e48742c374b322a and I hope it's correct.

      Anyone have the same MD5?

      TIA

Oh, I forgot to mention I'm asking about the 64-bit version. I'll be upgrading my 32-bit Feisty install as well, but right now my 64-bit Gutsy DVD is ready. So, anyone have the md5sums for
            kubuntu-7.10-dvd-amd64.iso
            and
            kubuntu-7.10-dvd-i386.iso

I have 8703b7773f717e171e48742c374b322a for kubuntu-7.10-dvd-amd64.iso, but I'd like to confirm if this is correct. Thanks! 8)

Why wouldn't the two images be the same? The DVD image at cdimage is in the Kubuntu directory.

Also, I would tend to agree that I might trust the one from kubuntu.org even though it is from BitTorrent except for the fact that I can't find the md5sums for that name anywhere. What is the story here?

Ditto. I've searched quite a bit today, looking for a site that has the md5 checksums posted for the DVD Kubuntu - haven't found one yet.

Well, the data (and therefore the md5sums) would differ, if only because Ubuntu and Kubuntu have different startup graphics, and different defaults for installation. There may be other differences, but I don't really know. The thing is, if Ubuntu and Kubuntu installation discs had the exact same data on them, then what would differentiate Kubuntu from Ubuntu?

But, isn't the Kubuntu DVD really Kubuntu, even if Ubuntu is hosting the image? I know that Ubuntu and Kubuntu are different. The image in the kubuntu directory at cdimage should be for Kubuntu even though it is on ubuntu.com.

                    What am I missing?

That is exactly the same as the md5 sum for gutsy-dvd-amd64.iso from
                      http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/dvd/current/MD5SUMS

                      $ wget -q -O - http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/dvd/current/MD5SUMS
                      8703b7773f717e171e48742c374b322a *gutsy-dvd-amd64.iso
                      acf811303f380d07106d8fd8b923839d *gutsy-dvd-i386.iso
                      $

This seems to be a match. Can someone verify that the md5sum for kubuntu-7.10-dvd-i386.iso from Kubuntu's BitTorrent is acf811303f380d07106d8fd8b923839d which should be the same as for the gutsy-dvd-i386.iso from cdimage's kubuntu directory?

Well, ok. If the Kubuntu DVD image (64-bit) hosted on ubuntu.com has the same md5sum that I have, I guess it's legit. Thanks, stephen_biggs! 8)

Can anyone confirm the other image md5sum? I should be able to in about 8 hours.

I can in about 3 hours, but I'll be asleep a lot longer than that.... I'll post my MD5sum when I wake up
