    Not enough diskspace for upgrade

Ok, I have an 9Gb / partition with 1.9Gb free, but apparently this is not enough for the upgrade
from Feisty to Gutsy? Fine by me, but there's not much I can do to free up space, is there? I tried
sudo apt-get clean, but that doesn't do much. One thing I could do is replace the download dir for
the upgrade with a link to another partition with enough space, but I don't know where to find the
    download dir. Any help?
    I.

    Just a few questions.

Do you have a separate /home partition?

You say you have a a partition with enough space? So if you don't have a separate /home you could move all of your data over to that partition.

Conversely you could use the gparted live cd:
    http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php

to add more space to your root partition. This might screw up your uuid (fstab) but you can repair that simply enough. There is a lot of info on that link on how to do this.

    I hope this helps

Should have clarified that: yes I do have a separate /home partition. There's no data in my root partition, save
for the stuff in /var, and that's 317Mb at this time. So I don't really see how I can free up space in /. I figured
9Gb should have been enough, but apparently it isn't. Bit disappointing, I have to say.

Yes, it should be. Hmm... you can either go the gparted path or just do a fresh install of gutsy. Before you do that I would save all of your kontact (kmail, calander, etc) and other stuff to a different directory like kontactold if relevant and delete .kde (hidden file) from /home/yourusername/.
Gutsy has a new version of kde (3.5.8) so it will not like your old .kde.

An afterthought: You could also try upgrading from the alt cd. I would use that for a fresh install anyway:

More than disappointing, if true, but I'm having considerable difficulty accepting this proposition -- in a year of working with *buntu, I've never seen it go over 5GB. Let's see what our friend Mr. Google can turn up on the topic "how to clean up my bloaty *buntu installation" .....

Ok, autoclean didn't do much, deborphan maybe removed 30Mb, localepurge didn't do much, getting rid of old kernels got me about half a gig, and the residual config thing about 100Mb, IIRC. Now I'm at 6.3GB used, 2.6GB free, should be enough for the upgrade, but if you say you've never seen it go over 5GB, it's still a bit much isn't it? Most of it seems to be in /usr/lib (2.2GB) and /usr/share (2.9GB). The var/lib directory is one of the bigger ones outside of those two, at 237Mb. Any ideas where I can shave off some more? And is it possible to find the residual config stuff in adept-manager, or do you need synaptic for that?
            I.

Consider using FileLight to find what really eats up Your disk space.
