The boot stanza worked ok, but I still got the same error behavior (same as the bug reports). Then I tried ext3 for casper-rw and it is working great after several re-boots; however, there have been a few messages/issues which I've been able to work past.

Glad it worked for you. I was completely unaware of the problems people were having with persistence. I had great luck with 6.06 and 6.10, but never did get persistence working with 7.04. When 7.10 was released I started right off with an ext3 persistent partition out of habit.

Also, my previous Knoppix UFD had lots of problems with persistence when the partition was formatted as ext2. Changing to ext3 fixed it. The current version (5.1.1) has a utility to set up persistence and it does the formatting as ext2, and now the corruption problems are back...

So it sounds like there have been some issues all along with the Union file system that must get masked by the journaling when you use ext3.

Yes. And who knows about wear-out. After several Live Persistent sessions, I have 90 MB saved to casper-rw, but it has so far cleared the /tmp for me upon exiting. I've decided to "sacrifice" my Kingston 2 GB to see about wear-out, a worthy $20 experiment ($17 on sale at CompUSA recently). So far, I've installed Firefox, Thunderbird, all my Desktop settings, and changed various configurations. So far so good -- just one hang on exit, but a hard re-set cleared it this time. And it won't hold the correct time (not a big deal). So we'll see. Thanks again. Post any new stuff you think of.

Yes; occasionally the system boots up displaying UTC instead of local time. Ditto on the programs; I installed a lot of stuff including remote desktop clients, Cisco VPN, Firefox and extensions/themes, wallpapers, changed tons of settings, updated a few times and the total usage is still under 100 MB on the 1 GB persistent partition. Pretty decent.

I don't think that wear will be an issue. I've been using this drive pretty heavily for more than 2 years and, like you say, they are under $20 now so even if it does wear out some day it will have been a good investment.

What is especially nice about having Kubuntu Live on a USB flash drive is the last time I traveled I brought along only the UFD with Kubuntu instead of a laptop, and it was like having my PC with me, sort of, only it was a lot smaller and lighter and easier to carry around!

Geez – your post is a good data point regarding wear-out! I'd say 2 years and going is pretty good.
I think I've been at this too long today. I'm trying to do sudo apt-get install kubuntu-restricted-extras to get Kaffeine to play wmv, etc., and get “Couldn't find package kubuntu-restricted-extras.” I don't see in source.list anything much different than in my hard drive installed K 7.10. Oh well, little by little I'll build up the flash drive to get a decent testing of it, as you have.

This is a good feedback here for others coming down this road.

It's working (so far) very well using the ** ext3 ** casper-rw partition you recommended (Thanks again).

An irony is that my main hard-drive-installed Kubuntu's is broken, and at one point, I actually relied on the Live persistent Kubuntu UFD to get some things done. Upside down!
