Installing with an existing /home on separate HDD

I have prepared my existing Fiesty setup with my /home setup on a separate hard drive, in readiness for the next clean install - Gutsy. I "upgraded" to Fiesty after switching ubuntu to Kubuntu (which I know prefer) and the setup seems a bit messy. I decided for the next version that a clean install was worthwhile, hence the separate /home idea.

Is there anything I should know before installing Gutsy - will it recognise my /home or do I have to tell it where it is? Do I use the standard CD or the Alternate? Is there anything else that needs backing up - or should everything I need be in my /home? (my /home is backed up on another networked PC!)

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Cheers

Your best bet is to use the alternate cd. When it comes to partitions point it to /home and choose not to format it. You will have to do some clean up afterwards to remove some old config files but it should work.

If you already have your files backed up your probably best to reformat and start clean.

I used the normal cd. You can select the "edit partitions yourself" option there to assign mountpoints to existing partitions. Just be sure to not select format on your /home.

You might find the kde versions different between feisty and gutsy so I would go into /home/youruser/.kde (hidden file) and backup all your settings for kontact, mail, calander, etc to a different folder and delete .kde. After you install (you can choose the home partition but DO NOT FORMAT by doing manual partitioning in the live install or using the alt. cd as mentioned before) you will get a new .kde in your /home/youruser/. Now you can replace all your bacjed up settings and you should be ready to rock.

        I hope this helps
