    Gutsy: stable or lemon?

    Hello,

I am still running Edgy, since Feisty turned out to be a complete lemon for me...
(see this thread for details: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3082358 )

I have tried the Gutsy Live CD, and I can't say that I was too impressed: it crashed on me, something that no previous Kubuntu Live CDs have done.

Anyway, my question to those who already installed Gutsy is as follows: is the installed system stable? And have the Feisty problems with Firefox been fixed? Or are we looking at another lemon?

    Thanks,
    Jean

P.S. Yes, I know that I could keep running Edgy indefinitely, but soon the security support will end, and I'm already wishing for newer versions of some of the software I use.

That's pretty unusual. When you say "crash", what exactly do you mean? Are there any other computers that you could try that CD on? It would be nice to confirm that it's a good burn, before diving into what the problem is when it's on your hardware.

      Hey,

I doubt it's hardware. I always check the MD5SUM before burning a CD, and before running the Live CD for the first time, I also always run the menu option to check the CD for defects. Moreover, the Edgy Live CD runs fine!

So do I, Jean -- I think it's the CD!

p.s. "Check CD for Defects" sometimes tells lies ..... :P

I meant that X dies and restarts. Only X, not the whole system. Though sometimes it also just freezes, forcing a hard reset.

          Thanks,

Sounds like a voodoo explanation to me. Anyway, I'm gonna try burning a different brand at 4x and I'll let you know if the problem persists...

            Cheers,
            Jean

and I'll burn the chicken feathers for you ....

Seriously, do you think it is KDM that is crashing, or just the display driver? Can you configure a VESA display, using the
              Code:
              sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
              script?

Well, I decided to risk it, and I installed Gutsy on my machine. BIG MISTAKE. The problems with X.org didn't happen only on the Live CD: a fresh installation of Gutsy is the most unstable Linux system I ever tried. X keeps crashing all the time! And mind you, this is not a hardware problem, after all Edgy worked fine!
