my upgrade to gutsy seems to have worked but not that smoothly

The adept-manager bailed out with more than 750 packages still needing to be upgraded.

I rebooted and discovered that the kernel was not updated properly so I had to boot an older version which worked fine.

To finish my upgrade, I opened Konsole and ran

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade

that updated 500 or so packages but bailed with 200+ still outstanding. I rebooted again and this time the kernel seemed okay so I used Adept to finish the upgrade. Mostly the system seems okay--no Dolphin (which was easy to fix) and samba can't see my workgroup (described in another post on th gutsy software forum).

Yep, that is pretty much how it went for me. Took more than two reboots for me though. All in all and after a lot of the most recent updates, I only have one thing that will not work properly, but it is livable right now. Glad you were able to recover as well.

Generally you should do 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' when upgrading a full version.
