Gutsy Upgrade = kdm cannot start

Upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy today. So far only problem remaining is that KDM will not start. I could logon at command prompt and do startx and everything worked. Tried everything I could to get kdm started and gave up and installed gdm instead. It works!

Curious to know if anyone else saw this problem.

When I upgraded from Feisty to Gutsy, many of my apps became corrupted, including my video driver; I just had to reinstall them and now I'm runnin' strong 8) KDM wouldn't work at first, so I switched to the nv driver and used Envy to uninstall and reinstall my Nvidia driver; that's all it took.

Re: Gutsy Upgrade = kdm cannot start

      I tried again this morning.

      /etc/init.d/kdm start

      gives the following error:

      sed: -e expression #1, char 32: unterminated `s' command

KDM refuses to start and I have to use GDM for now.

Re: Gutsy Upgrade = kdm cannot start

I am not having any issues with my desktop. Everything is still there and works OK. What happened for me is that KDM failed to start and I was left with a command prompt on boot. I could login and do startx and everything was OK. I uninstalled KDM and installed GDM. I can now get X on bootup and can login with no problems. I just can't figure out why KDM will not start.

Also, I cannot get a file manager to run with root privileges in gutsy. I tried both kfmclient and dolphin and neither one works with kdesu or kdesudo.

I made a backup of root with clonezilla live before I upgraded. I may restore that or just do a new install once the final comes out. It is such a pain to do a reinstall, but it is good every once and a while too.

I know, I know, I know -- I'm feeling your pain. I decided to do some experimentation with the XFS filesystem, and between that and the fact that I had 3 Linux OS's installed and really only want 2, I ended up burning a Gutsy RC Alternate Install CD, which is presently doing it's thing on my system. :P

Well, I gave up on Gutsy for now. I decided to go the painless route and I restored my root partition with Clonezilla Live! I am glad I decided to back it up! I am back to pre-upgrade with a running KDM in less than 5 minutes.

Maybe I will give it another go later.

I had exactly the same problem and it turns out

                /etc/default/locale

contained two duplicate lines, which causes sed to choke.

                Hope this helps someone.

My etc/default/locale has the same locale repeated 4 times, maybe that is what caused my problem.

I will have to do another backup and try upgrading again!

                  Thanks!

Well, I am now running Gutsy. Editing the locale file must of taken care of the kdm problem. It was still not as easy an upgrade as edgy to feisty, but it now seems to work OK.

                    Thanks!
