Gutsy on new drive; GRUB only on old drive

    Hi, from San Francisco!

So, I got a brand new SATA card and 320 GB drive (probably can get a 1TB for the same price now).
I decided to make a fresh clean install of Gutsy Gibbon and move all my files over. Easy, right?
Well, I moved my entire /home directory from hda2 to sda2 without a problem. Then reboot...It works!!!
Now, I go to disconnect the old HDA drive to shelve it for a rainy day, do a reboot and...no GRUB. I have to reinstall HDA in order to boot up to Gutsy. (Gutsy is definitely installed on SDA as I disconnected HDA for the original install.

What happened? Doesn't the new Gutsy instance have its own GRUB?

    Please advise. Thanx
    Bruce

Re: Gutsy on new drive; GRUB only on old drive

BIOS "counts" your hard drives, and Grub numbers them according to what BIOS says.

So, BIOS used to say IDE = "1" and SATA = "2". So Grub said "Linux is on "2"" and wrote the bootloader accordingly.

Now, you have changed the rules of the game. BIOS now says SATA = "1" and that's all there is. Grub says "bootup #2 --- OH SH&T!".

Actually, Grub probably placed the bootloader on the MBR of that IDE drive -- you can fix it by running the grub installer, and having it put the bootloader on the new #1. Here's help: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3081671.0

Check out the "Install or re-install Grub" section.
