    Broken Upgrade!

Following the instructions for a 7.04 to 7.10 Beta distro upgrade, the system failed to install or configure some files, then stalled at %2 installation for hours on configuring some lib, never went beyond that. Canceling this of course resulted in a broken OS (as the message said it would).

I guess I shouldnt have expected better, the Ubuntu distro upgrade tools have _always_ resulted in a broken install for me, but I was hoping that this time might be different.

Kubuntu is still my distro of choice, and I am just going to do a fresh install, but the whole upgrade process really needs to be looked at. I assume that it works for some people, otherwise they wouldnt have it in there, but it has never worked for me and I have tried it on practically every version.

Just a fair warning to those thinking of using this tool, I would not try it, just back up your home dirs and do a fresh install from CD.

    Re: Broken Upgrade!

Perhaps it's my Debian past coming through, but what is wrong with editing the sources in /etc/apt/sources.list and doing a good old fashioned "apt-get dist-upgrade"

      Re: Broken Upgrade!

Ive tried that before the first time I upgraded Ubuntu, I ended up with an unusable system. It would boot but so many things were broken that it was no fun.

I dont mind reinstalling from scratch, not a issue for me, but if the upgrade system breaks like this, why not just remove it?

Anyway my post isnt to complain, just to warn others who may be considering using the upgrade feature.
