Error Reading Disk When Trying to Install

    Hey everyone,

I'm a long time Gentoo Linux user, but I have a computer I'm installing in a semi-public place that I need to "Just Work" without any issues. For that, I decided to use Kubuntu, however I'm having an issue installing.

I downloaded the latest beta release (7.10 beta), and burned the ISO to a CD. The CD will properly boot, bringing up the Kubuntu boot screen. When I select "Install Kubuntu" it sits at the screen and I can see the light on the CD-ROM blinking furiously, yet nothing happens. After about 5 minutes, I get an error box that pops up saying "CD Read Error" offering me the option to reboot. This issue also happened with the 7.04 release CD.

I've installed Gentoo on this computer without any problem, though I ran into issues administering it, hence wanting to install Kubuntu. I've read the CD in Gentoo without any problems, so I know the CD-ROM does work.

Any ideas on getting this to work?

it may read ok in gentoo and elsewhere, but some of the files may still be corrupted. You can use the Verify CD option at boot to check , or just try an md5sum manually.

Very often, I find a disk image is fine, just a bad burn. Try to burn it at a slower speed and see if that helps.

It's looking like it's the CD burn...which is odd because I've never had this problem from my laptop's CD burner before.

I'm looking into trying to install off the harddisk to save myself from wasting another CD, but worst case I at least have something to try now.

Thanks, if you hadn't pointed out the obvious I probably would've started tearing this computer apart trying to fix it... :-X

Its not necessarily the burner. I have currently 3 burners, all different brands, and it sometimes happens to all of them, as well as to the last couple of them i had in the past. Just as likely its the cd's. From experience, I just automatically ratchet back my iso burn speeds one or 2 notches from top speed without even thinking about it.
