Is it possible that there are entries in /etc/X11/xorg.conf for devices that do not exist?

      don't appear to be
I just tried the 'alternate' method of <Alt F2>

Press Alt+F2 to run a command, or open a terminal window
Run the following command (the quotes are important):
      kdesu "adept_manager --version-upgrade"
      Click Version Upgrade
      Follow the on-screen instructions

the upgrade wizard downloaded, then threw an error screen:
"Could not verify the integrity of the upgrader application. This program will now exit"

I've now tried the same process three more times: twice it crapped out, the third time it trucked right through- go figure ... it's now "Fetching the Upgrades" and telling me there's "about 51 minutes remaining"

      more later

a few places I had to back up and take another run or two to force things to take, but eventually it's all there. Nowhere near the grief I've run into with earlier version changes.

        Now I'll go play :-)
