    Moving to Kubuntu from Ubuntu

    Hi,

When the latest version of Kubuntu is released next month I am looking at moving back to Kubuntu from using Ubuntu, but have a couple of questions.

    1. On the Ubuntu forums there is an HowTo on how to setup support for Media Files (MP3 etc...) (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=413626), will this work on Kubuntu or is there an alternative guide for Kubuntu

    2. I am planning to do a clean install of Kubuntu, can I just format root and leave my /home partition unformatted (on different partition) and will this work during install, (I do have all my data backed up to an external drive, but I would like to do things the easy way if I can)

    Thanks,

For the codecs, Kubuntu still uses the medibuntu repo but it uses different packages. They are easy to get once installed. Instead of the Gstreamer stuff it uses libxine-extracodecs as well as others.

I would recommend backing up all you personal files or creating another partition for you personal stuff outside of /home and start fresh to avoid leftover config files an such. A separate partition would also help should you ever have to reinstall or move to another distro.

eriefisher's advice is good. Having just done essentially the same thing, I can tell you that if you choose to "re-use" the /home partition, you will have some non-functional configuration items left over from the prior installation. It's not a big deal, and doesn't affect performance or functionality -- you just have some blank icons to send to the trashcan, and maybe some bogus auto-start programs. It would certainly be cleaner looking if you could just set it up completely new.

Thanks, I thought formating would be the way to go, would have just been quicker if I didn't (as I have over 40gb of digital photos), I will make sure I run my FullSync Backup job which does an exact copy of all my data from Home/Documents to my External drive.

One more quick question what would you recommend to format the drive as ext3 or raiserfs, I am currently using ext3, as I am fairly new to Linux not sure what the advantages/disadvantages of raiser is over ext3

        Thanks,

AFAIK, for personal workstation/desktop users, this is truly just a matter of taste. For laptops, the slower boot up of reiserfs is a disadvantage. I'm on a desktop and I use reiserfs because I think it may be a little more rugged in its ability to recover after my electric company sends me a little power outage. :P

Other folks probably have other views, of course -- that's the way "matters of taste" go ....

Thanks, I will stay with Ext3 then as I am running on a Laptop and having a nice fast startup is always an advantage (under 1 min including login compared to xp with 5 mins if I was lucky )
