    How Stable Is Tribe 5?

Hello - I realize gutsy isn't stable and it's in development...but how stable is it?

Is it usable? Or will I be switching back after a day or two? I know "it'll be different for every system," no guarantees, etc, but what have the typical experiences been so far? Thanks so much!

Re: How Stable Is Tribe 5?

The problems I've had were about getting things installed. My system has been rock solid (using the Generic Kernel) for over 24 hours now.

Seriously though, I'm going to be full swing doing work this week. I'll give an update in a couple of days to tell you. I'll be doing audio work and some basic office stuff.

Oh Urban Terror 4 runs perfectly, I played that for over an hour yesterday going to several servers with no issues.

Current opinion - seems solid will update in a few days.

Re: How Stable Is Tribe 5?

I've been using it since Tribe 4 and it seems quite stable considering its stage...
I use it now on all my machines without major hassles.

What doesn't work at the moment (for me):
opera and konqueror with flash are very slow or crash altogether ; firefox on the other hand works as it should
acroread cannot start due to some gtk error
hda-intel sound cards may have some troubles running 2.6.22-10 (FIXED by Aug. 28 updated linux-ubuntu-modules)

      Otherwise it runs pretty smooth.

Which version of Audacity did you install? I recently discovered that the new ver. 1.3.3 (Beta) will give you an error when you open a .aup file from ver. 1.2.6. Kinda worried me, but the folks on the mailing list say it's OK 99% of the time - there's not actually any problem. I'd like to hear other opinions.

I'll be watching for that. I won't be doing anything audio until the end of the week - got a commercial to do. All my stuff is from 1.2.6 I've used Ardour a bit and it's definitely got some features that are lacking in Audacity but I just find the Audacity interface so "familiar" that it's just a pain to go to something different.

edit post didn't work out for me here at work.

If 1.3.3 doesn't open my old stuff then it might make me move to Ardour was the point I was trying to make.

Re: How Stable Is Tribe 5?

So I cut a 1:06 minute long track today using Audacity 1.3.3 (beta) the system worked flawlessly. My work flow was only interupted by some minor changes in this new version of Audacity.

After a week of working with Tribe5 (and of course the updates that have happened throughout the week) I have found the system to be VERY stable. The following is what I spent my time doing.

              1. e-mail with Thunderbird
              2. research on the net with Firefox (many many tabs open at once)
              3. gaming - Urban Terror 4.0
              4. word processing - with OOo
              5. Multi-Track Audio recording and mixing with Audacity
              6. playing with the look of the system - icons and such

I have not experienced any issues at this point other than today Konq seems to be broken. Dolphin was unexpectedly in it's place as the file manager today. Being completely unfamiliar with Dolphin this did slow down my work.

My current thoughts are that Gutsy is maturing later in the dev cycle than Feisty did but at this point I am confident to use it as my main system. At this point now I would suggest others use the OS without much concern.

Hope this is helpful to others who are considering giving Gutsy a try prior to release.

Re: How Stable Is Tribe 5?

It does get better and better. After using it for a month I can say it's quite stable. The gtk issues preventing Opera and Konqueror to work with flash appear to have been fixed; same goes for acroread. There are, however, some VERY serious bugs in the latest Kontact which point to the fact that gutsy is still beta OS.
At the moment whenever something gets fixed it appears that it breaks someting else. Finding solutions or workarounds takes quite some time and often a bit of work, so less experienced users may still want to wait for the official release.

@Bongo5HH: you can always revert to Konqueror for file management (kcontrol -> KDE Components -> File Associations -> inode -> directory)

Are Flash and other multimedia things working with 64Bit now?

Re: How Stable Is Tribe 5?

My install is very stable. Actually it is more stable than feisty ever was.

                      Having said that.
Lightning (calander) in Thunderbird doesn't crash TB anymore but it still doesn't work

For some reason I cannot get compiz-fusion to fire up.

But those are details. Otherwise I am pleasantly surprised.
Open Office works again which helps

Me either.. but that might be primarily because I don't have a clue HOW to get it to run.. lol I've installed everything I can think of and still can't find an "on" switch as it were.

I've tried reading the guides but none, I mean none says - install this and this, run this and click on "turn it on" This has been true of all of these 3D desktop things... it's like a secrete how to actually turn it on... lol

Re: How Stable Is Tribe 5?

OK, I fell victim to temptation, zapped a perfectly-functioning Kubuntu 32-bit Feisty installation in order to have this Gutsy 64-bit Kubuntu.

Question #1: Anybody else finding the Restricted Drivers Manager to be showing Nazi-like behavior? I installed the package nvidia-glx-new to run my GF 7900GS, and when I attempted to enable it with Restricted Manager, much to my shock I observed nvidia-glx-new being removed, and nvidia-glx being installed, and then I found I had the 3-versions ago proprietary driver -9639 installed .... WTF?

(I have subsequently figured out an end-run, and got the -100.14.11 driver installed, but SHEEEESH!)

Question #2: I see the Realtime kernel, "rt" is available, so I grabbed it. As far as I can tell, Restricted Manager is non-functional/non-existent for this one. Anyone else get it to work? I removed the rt kernel, for now, but I want it eventually. Not sure how I'm going to work with it if I can't get it to use the same xorg.conf file as -generic.

Otherwise, I've got quite a bit of re-building to do, but Gutsy seems to work more or less like it's supposed to ... I think I'm gonna like it!

@Dible: I am sorry to hear about your trials, but then again you like a good challenge, don't you?

@Bongo: in theory it should start up with :

                            Code:
                            compiz --replace
in Alt+F2 but that doesn't work.

                            Compiz-fusion settings manager crashes.

My card is okay as well as my x.org.conf.

The ubuntu version of gutsy works fine in CF, which leads me to the question: why there and not here?

I think it is a KDE issue and the devs. are keeping very quite about that. Lets see what happens

The rest is very sweet afaiac

Hey that works, now I have stuff happening. But there's something not right. Adept Notifier crashed and I can't get rid of the window for it, and for the crash notification.

Going to restart and see if that fixes it.
