Re: KDM won't load after Restricted Drivers enabled

it looks like it cannot find the canonical commercial sources , which there should't be anyway I'd think. Try disabling the canonical commercial repo temporarily, and make sure you have the source repos enabled (deb-src)

Re: KDM won't load after Restricted Drivers enabled [SOLVED]

        It's solved.

        This procedure works!

        Code:
        apt-get source nvidia-glx-new
        sh linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22-2.6.22.3/nvidia/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run -x
        sudo cp NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libnvidia-wfb.so.100.14.11 /usr/lib/xorg/modules/
        sudo ln -s /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libnvidia-wfb.so.100.14.11 /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libwfb.so

Thank you both for all your help!!

I did this after I installed the restricted drivers and before I rebooted. The system has rebooted using the nvidia drivers just fine!!

now if I can get Audacity to work (I haven't tried yet on Tribe 5 - wouldn't run on Tribe 3) I will be a happy camper! If I can get low-latency going I'll be ecstatic!

Thank you both so much!!! What a help you have been.

        Kev

Yay -- glad to hear you got it!

There is a new version of Audacity -- 1.3.3 Beta. It is installed on my e-live system and seems pretty solid. You might want to give it a shot -- it may be easier than Nvidia drivers!

That's what I've got running actually. It's what's in Gutsy's repos. I started it up and some some graphical changes and wondered if my eyes were going crazy.

I haven't played with it yet, but I'm hoping there are some real improvements.

Re: KDM won't load after Restricted Drivers enabled [SOLVED]

I am having a different problem, since loading the drivers, if I use the scroll bar in Konqueror I get a crash, can't close Konqueror as the pointer won't move, had to hard boot.

TC ( I have noted that the new drivers had set my refresh too low at 50 so have altered this to 61 which is nearer my displays config of 60.

I wonder if you have the right monitor selected?

If you do it seems like something went wrong during the install of the drivers - try setting your drivers back to vesa and completely remove the packages and do the install again. Maybe apply all other updates first, and then do the video stuff by it's self?

Sorry to stray off topic, but if you use Audacity 1.3.3 to open a .aup file that you made with 1.2.6, you'll see a warning about file compatibility. I had a little correspondence with the developers over the weekend, and they're pretty confident that the 1.2.6 files will actually be fully compatible and functional in 1.3.3. I'd like to hear your experience with that, if you happen to have some files that you made with 1.2.6.

I'm home for my exercise period (yes it is nice) and I just opened an old project I did in 1.2.6 there were a number of errors including the one you mentioned. The errors seem to be because a poor saving and backing up practice I had back then. This was a "worst case senario" and it worked. The project did load with all current tracks in proper position and played perfectly.

That's a relief -- thanks! I spent the last 4 months capturing a hundred or so old 78 RPM records, using Audacity. The last thing I need is a file compatibility problem with the new version!

Yup that would be a joy wouldn't it? lol!

Sure wish I could get the Linux-rt kernel running...

You're doing Audio on what system again? I know I coud likely just scroll up.... I isntalled UbuntuStudio but I haven't even touched it yet...

I'm using Ubuntu 64-bit low-latency kernel on my Intel X6800 rig. The Intel motherboard has their HDA sound system, which seems to be pretty decent for my purposes. Audacity is a little funny about playing back on it -- nothing else that uses sound can be running, or else Audacity puts up a "no playback device" error. But as long as I give it exclusive access, it does a great job.

I've got a MAudio Audiophile 24/96 and I need to use mp3 and sometimes wma files. Think Kubunut 64Bit would be a good idea?

Anyidea why there is no low-lat kernel in the repos for Gutsy? I know there's a RT one but it doesn't work.. lol

Re: KDM won't load after Restricted Drivers enabled [SOLVED]

I've used Kubuntu for a while, on one of my machines. I've had similar problems with Kubuntu 7.04 Feisty. I've overcome it by installing Ubuntu first, enabling the Restricted-Drivers Manager, & restarting GNOME. Then using Synaptic to install kde-core, & any other KDE applications I want. It may be a roundabout way, but doing it like this, I don't have any problems.

So I've tried installing 7.10 on a test machine (as it's alpha) with a nVIDIA GeForce4 MX440-SE, & had similar trouble to the OP. As long as I've not tried to use the nVIDIA drivers, it works fine. Soon as I try to install the proprietary ones, it won't load KDM. I get an "API mismatch: nVIDIA kernel version" or something similar. So like the OP, I reinstalled, with the same problem.

I downloaded 7.10 "Gutsy" Ubuntu, & installed that instead. I enabled the driver in the Restricted-Drivers Manager, logged out, & it loaded GDM. I booted into the GNOME desktop without any trouble! I opened a terminal, & ran "nvidia-settings" to ensure the refresh rate & resolution were correct. It all went very smoothly, with no trouble. I rebooted the machine to ensure it *was* working ok, & I logged into GNOME again. I checked teh resolution etc, & it was just as I'd set it.
It would therefore seem, that there is some problem with Kubuntu & nVIDIA drivers?
