KDM won't load after Restricted Drivers enabled [SOLVED]

Every time I enable the Restricted Drivers for my nV 8600GT the system won't load KDM on bootup. I get a blank screen with a cursor. Somehow I managed to get a prompt there and so I can execute commands but I don't know what to do with it.

I've resorted to just re-installing and leaving the restricted drivers off for now.

    Ideas?

    Kev

Which Nvidia driver are you using? The newest one, -100.14.11, is not yet in the nvidia-glx-new package. I'm not sure whether the -9755 driver, which is in nvidia-glx-new, will run the 8600GT.

sjust the other day, the package nvidia-glx-new was updated to 100.14.11, so i would suggest another go.

If it does not work for you still, get to your console and type in this command:
      Code:
      startx
which will attempt to start your gui and give any errors that may help out.

This happened just today so it must be happening with the newest drivers.

Right now they only solution I have to the problem is to re-install. I've done this three times in the last 30 or so hours and am not so interested in doing it again.

Does Envy work with Gutsy? Or is there something I could do from the prompt to get the system to use the generic drivers again so I a reinstall won't be needed?

        Thanks for the help!

That's a "NO", or at least a "nothing guaranteed"

I checked Nvidia's site -- the -9755 version driver DOES support the 8600GT. So, I wonder if our Canonical buddies moved that one back to the nvidia-glx package? I don't know -- it they did, then that package might work for you. :P

EDIT: When I look in my Feisty repos, the nvidia-glx-new package still shows the -9755 driver. Maybe its only changed for Gutsy ...

ok assuming I'm stupid - cause I am. hehe

How do I make the restricted driver manger use this package? I'm going to be playign with it while I hope for your reply.

Thanks for your help - especially going out of your way to go see if the drivers worked with my card or not!

I'm looking through the packages right now too.

              Thanks!

You have more "guts" than me (little pun there ....)

Since you're screwed into reinstalling at every boot, why not give Envy a shot a fixing it? The worst that could happen is, you'll have to reinstall, and that's your future anyway. If the xorg architecture isn't real different from Feisty to Gutsy, it might just work.

                    Here's your link: http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html

Get the file "envy_0.9.7-0ubuntu8_all.deb" which is about halfway down the page. Save it to your Desktop, right-click it, and "KPackage Manager Menu>Install" it.

EDIT: Are you feeling like a guinea pig, yet?

oh yes do I ever feel like that.

But hey.. look at it this way. After 2 years my experience (even if it's not based on my experience lol) might help some other people. Bout time I give back a little. I've tried before but I don't know how to fix many of the tough problems.

It installed nicely, I found the same one you linked me to.

Will let you know soon.. if I don't post for over an hour.. you know how it went. LOL

                        Envy no go -

"ENVY ERROR: Your Operative System does not seem to be supported by Envy"

Envy has some dependent packages -- don't be shocked if you get an error that says you need "fakeroot", python-glade, and some other ones. Just write them down from the error message, then use Adept and install them, and try again with Envy.

Oh %$((^ it must be checking to make sure you have Feisty or earlier.

                            Translation : "you're screwed" :P

Well, do you want to try the Nvidia proprietary installer? I got it to work, once ....

                              ya!

That might be better than using the restricted driver manager... seeing as that has failed several times now.
