    " Pitch Black " problem

A very novice pc user and trying out Kubuntu, have downloaded three different iso"s of Kubuntu 7.10 i386 and all work fine up until all the text ok's are done... then all I get is a pitch black screen?
Ive tried all different methods i.e., different vga settings, safe mode etc., I am using a dumpy little test pc before I load this into my new pc, the tester is a dell optiplex gx110 with pent. 3 @ 667 mhz w/ 512 mb ram... any ieas?? has anyone else run into this??

Totally black screen, or as is suspected, do you have a blinking cursor in the upper left corner of the screen? If that is the case, follow the steps in the following (excellent) post:

Maybe this? Still worth a look.

You can also try CTRL-ALT-"-" (that's the minus key on the number pad). This changes the resolution that X is currently using to the next in sequence. See if you can at least get to a resolution that will work, and then you can go to System Settings to "tweak" it.

When booting from CD, with a lot of graphics cards, you will have a long wait at a blank screen before it finally loads and at times it may seem as though the PC is doing nothing.

Although I am sure you have done so already, I suggest you first of all hit the boot from cd/install option in the menu then wait 5 or 6 minutes for the load. As long as you have over 320mb of ram, you should eventually see the screen when booting from cd, though naturally, the less memory and the slower its speed, the longer it will take.

              Hope that helps

There may be another issue here.

On some systems the live CD will start up the menu and when you choose to start the Live CD you get a bunch of errors and no desktop where you can start installing the system to the hard drive.

This has to do with either outdated BIOS or unsupported CD-ROM drive.

I made a boot disk with Smart Boot Manager http://linux.simple.be/tools/sbm
and booted my machine from that boot disk

Insert your (K)Ubuntu CD-ROM and press Ctrl+I to refresh the drives list and choose to boot from CD-ROM.

That solved it for me, thanks Moonrise. I have used Ubuntu 6.06 for quite a time now and once I got ADSL I figured I would upgrade to 7.10 and then tried the KDE desktop.
Soon decided on a clean install of Kubuntu 7.10 and lo and behold got nothing but a totally black screen from the Live CD, burn was good, MD5 right but this was on an elderly machine with an old ATI card, going nowhere until I spotted your reply. Perfect and I hope the confirmation might help somebody else.

                  Cheers

Glad to see that post and suggestions still help. I think you'll like 7.10. I've been using it since Beta release and have been very pleased, no complaints.
