Ok, so I wanted to try out the current Kubuntu Gutsy CD on my Windows XP machine and it booted just fine from the CD (improvement from 7.04 which would just hang during boot). Anyway, my monitor was not detected and I tried changing the resolution to 1680x1050 manually which did not work either. So I kept playing with the user interface a little but realized that when I wanted to go back to Windows that there now was a major problem.
First it would not boot at all (although I have not done any installs fronm the kubuntu CD), then I was able to boot in VGA mode but not in the regular mode. Windows XP will still boot fine but the screen goes blank when it tries to activate the ATI drivers during the boot process. Tried reinstalling the drivers which did not help (the ATI Control Center now crashes and cannot be restarted).
Any ideas what I can do to save my video card? I did not realize how potentially dangerous a CD only tryout of ubuntu can be...
