    Kernel 2.6.22-6 hangs on boot.

I have been running Gutsy Gibbon very successfully since the beginning. The most annoying problem I encountered so far, besides wireless connection problems, is the fact that my installation regularly hangs at boot up. Recovery mode shows the critical section to be around the partition/file system test. Most of the time I can eventually get the OS to load completely. thereafter everything works great - until I decide to use Feisty or 6.06 to access old e-mail.
    Thereafter, the trouble starts again.

I have used the recovery console to access Gutsy on a terminal. I even could connect to the wireless access point and update/upgrade/dist-upgrade the OS.
    Corrected menu.lst.
    Boot hangs again.

Is this a bug or what am I missing?
    Any ideas, please?

By the way, my two other Kubuntu installations are on a hard drive that is exclusively Linux.
Gutsy resides on a Linux partition (ext file system) of a second hard drive. this drive also has Fat32 data partitions.
Konqueror shows the Gutsy partition as a regular (empty) directory until I mount it manually. QtParted does show the Gutsy partition (as hda6) but does not identify it as Linux partition. I can correct it but next time I go back into QtParted, it is again not shown as a Linux partition. Obviously I cannot tamper with it right now or I will eliminate my entire installation including all the 'data' that is important to me, i.e. e-mail, bookmarks, setups and updates.
