keyboard doesn't work after getting logged in to kubuntu

When I booted up my wife's computer she and I can use the keyboard to type in her password to log in, but when we r logged in to kubuntu the keyboard does not work, I tried to use it in the openoffice word processor, and I tried to use the keyboard to type in her password to access updater program and also to set her clock, but the keyboard does not work.
It just works when we log in to kubuntu.

can you try to press and hold a key in openoffice or at the terminal? if you hold down the letter A, and after a few seconds you see the letter A appear on the screen, then see this thread.
