Alsa problem

Hi there!

Alsa was working fine with me, but i did upgrade/update then it stopped working.

when I execute

alsamixer i #get this error
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device

aplay -l
aplay: device_list:204: no soundcards found...

I did compile alsa from scratch following with one of ubuntu step by step tutorial for rectifying the error. But still no clues. Im using DELL D630.

The link you gave me I already tasted before I posted in the forum.

The sound was working fine, until I updated some alsa files using apt-get.

I tried opening apt-get details on alsa.. I see there is package conflicts. Arent they test their package when they put update. We will be afraid of upgrading in the future. First happen with 8.04 my network card hangs the computer I had to format my Laptop, I put 7.10 again now sound problem. I think they want me to format again. or in sudden death move to windows.

I have no clues on this.. zero

There are repositories and there are repositories. Ordinary repositories should only have important security fixes, not updates. If you are using backports:

- sometimes packages from the ppa repositories can get your package management confused. To me the solution was to remove all ppa packages and install clean packages from the ordinary repositories.


If you are having problems after updated packages, you could try to downgrade packages: How to downgrade packages (forcing version)

The sound was working fine, until I updated some alsa files using apt-get.

Checking installed/updated/removed packages from the dpkg log:

Resent status log:

grep "status installed" /var/log/dpkg.log

grep upgrade /var/log/dpkg.log

grep remove /var/log/dpkg.log

A bit older dpkg log:

grep "status installed" /var/log/dpkg.log.1

grep upgrade /var/log/dpkg.log.1

grep remove /var/log/dpkg.log.1

The oldest logs - rotated dpkg logs (packed): dpkg.log.2.gz, dpkg.log.3.gz...
