Copying files to external hard disk

I'm trying to bulk copy a number of files to an external hard disk (USB -LaCie), using Dolphin (although I've also tried Konqueror, but still with no joy). I've been trying to copy a single directory with a number of subdirectories, containing a large number of files. What happens is that it copies the subdirectory structure OK, but none of the actual files. I have checked permissions - that doesn't seem to be a problem. Strange - hasn't been a problem on other occasions, although it's the first time I've tried something on this scale.

Has anyone had a similar experience, or some idea of what might be wrong?

Well, you checked permission, so you have permission to read/write those directories (I think execute permission means you can cd to it and then list (ls) contents)--doesn't hurt to have all rwx).

Did you try it with the command line (Konsole) using copy cp and the recursive option -r?
