USB confussion - HELP

USB is at best iffy.
I have not really used usb in the past recently acquired to storage devices and they work fine and as expected in $MS but with limited success in Kubuntu.
Here is one of the most recent problem I have encountered and can't seem to find a google answer for:
When copying a file from my flash drive to My Documents folder it goes through the process and then when it finishes I get "Could not read file /media/disk/iKey_mp3_0.mp3." Yet it just copied the file over.
Occasionally on my usb hd it will not access the drive at all even tough it's mounted.
But if I reboot all is well for awhile.
I did find this http://www.linux-usb.org/USB-guide/x173.html. In looking over my /proc no such thing exists, should I do this or will it mess up something else in Kubuntu?
Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Need a little bit more of information.
What brand/type/size of USB stick and what filesystem have you got on it?
What kind of USB HD? (I guess it might go into some sleep/powersawing?)

Never had any problems with usb sticks and disks on linux. It just works :-)

I have seen some problems with specific USB Keys (can't recall names) but they are ones that usually have extra files and games etc. that are installed on them by the manufacturers. With 6.06 and 7.10, I really haven't seen to many problems. You may have to format the whole key before it works correctly.

Also - - I have an old key I use a lot. Just recently, I went to move files from my 7.10 x86_64 install to a new Vista Home premium. Seems Vista thought there was a problem and wanted to "Scan and Fix" my key. Of course, I selected the 'don't do it' option.
