nvidia GeForce 4 would freeze whole system

    Hallo nvidia hackers.
Recently after some upgrades maybe my nv graphics card started giving serious problems.
    1. after resume (from hibernate) it will come into blank screen and freeze whole system
    in syslog i can see:
nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel. in normal boot (that somewhat works)
    after resume last messages are:
    Apr 11 22:37:39 hlinik kernel: [ 93.813903] NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 8, Channel 00000013
    Apr 11 22:37:51 hlinik kernel: [ 105.803371] NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 8, Channel 00000013
    Apr 11 22:38:03 hlinik kernel: [ 117.792841] NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 8, Channel 00000013
    Apr 11 22:38:15 hlinik kernel: [ 129.782308] NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 8, Channel 00000013
    Apr 11 22:38:27 hlinik kernel: [ 141.771779] NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 8, Channel 00000013
    Apr 11 22:38:39 hlinik kernel: [ 153.761247] NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 8, Channel 00000013
    Apr 11 22:38:51 hlinik kernel: [ 165.750717] NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 8, Channel 00000013

look at the time, there is significant delay, no response from keyboard nor power button

    2. in normal boot I cannot change screen resolution, the dialog saying resolution was changed for 15 seconds is shown, but there no change. Test button is disabled with message "this configuration cannot be safely tested" If I go to kdm and restart xserver, whole system freeze with scrambled screen.

I tried to change to to nvidia driver (non proprietary) but without effect.

Any help appreciated, thank you, have a nice tux

Sorry I made a mistake with the non proprietary driver. Now I have also removed the driver from System Settings | Advanced | Restricted drivers and it's now working fine. The only embarrassing thing is different resolution in KDM. It's actually same but using virtual screen which moves around with mouse arrow.
    in kdmrc
    Session=/etc/kde3/kdm/Xsession
same config should be used, so I don't know why....

Use Envy. Get it here: http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html

That doesn't really work, says it's going to download 27 packages, but download doesn't start, package db gets locked and I had to kill it from CLI. My internet works fine and I tried 3 times

So after some time I did give a try to envy again. This time it downloaded all the files, compiled and installed the driver. However it's as bad as before. Frozen system, scrambled display, wrong resolution, no help in forum. I think that paying little money for old good windows is not bad idea.
