      Re: cdrom no such device

      That would be normal given no mounted cdrom in the drive.

        Not that I can see that message. Where would I be looking for this?

          Re: cdrom no such device

          Have you checked your BIOS settings for the boot device order? It's a shot-in-the-dark, but see where the cdrom is listed. If it isn't first, move it up so it is. The boot device order would be:

          cdrom
          HD
          Floppy

          or similar. Just put the cdrom first followed by the HD.

          Oh, and as I forgot in all of this, Welcome to the Kubuntu Forums!! Lot's of good people here who are more than willing (if not always able!) to assist a new member.

            Re: cdrom no such device

            Had a look at the bios settings the cdrom is first hd next. Would it make a difference that it is a dvd drive?

              Re: cdrom no such device

              No. So is mine (CD/DVD rewritable).

              I looked over your attached file. Yup. No cdrom or DVD device identified. That's just plain weird. :P

              But it works if you put the LiveCD in and reboot?

                Re: cdrom no such device

                Sure does! The drive works, I have just dumped Windows and the hard drive was not the reason. All my hardware seems to be working fine on Kubuntu except this hard drive.

                  Re: cdrom no such device

                  if I try to enable the cdrom in "disks and file systems I get this error:

                  proc: no such file or directory

                  Return code from mount was 32.

                    Re: cdrom no such device

                    Okay. That can be checked/confirmed.

                    Open a console and type:
                    Code:
                    ls -l /media
                    You should see an entry for the cdrom that looks like this:
                    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 6 2007-12-05 12:05 cdrom -> cdrom0

                      Have done:

                      fred@freddy:~$ ls -l /media
                      total 4
                      lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 6 2008-02-23 16:36 cdrom -> cdrom0
                      drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2008-02-23 16:36 cdrom0
                      fred@freddy:~$

                        Re: cdrom no such device

                        Well, I'm at a loss as to what else to suggest. It is possible that the controller for the HD and your cdrom aren't 'compatible' running together in Kubuntu. I've seen at least one other member who had such a problem. He replaced the cdrom drive (on a Desktop PC) which resolved his problem. But on a laptop, well ....

                        Let's let some other members take a look at this thread. I'll notify a few and see if they can't shed any more light on this.

                          Thank you very much for your help!! Will not give up. I am still impressed with Kubuntu and like using it. Worst case external dvd drive.

                          Thanks.
