windows first move slowly then speed up after secs

    Hello,

    I've got kubuntu 7.1 64bit and the nvidia quadrofx1600M with 169.12 drivers (64bit).
Well the windows when I first drag them start by move very slowly on the screen.
Then after 2-3 secs they speed up and the system become responsive again.

I get a similar problem with the 3D application maya viewport, so this is a widespread issue.

    Any clues?
    Thanks
    Luca

Ok the new feature powerMizer of the latest nvidia drivers is the culript.
Powermizer uses adaptive clocking and reduces the clock speed when the system is idle. unfortunately this makes the windows dragging very sluggish and creates refresh issues in Maya (3D app).

Do you by any chance know how to disable it?

    Thanks
    luca

Interesting -- I thought I was noticing some new "features" in the performance with that new driver, although it doesn't affect mine very badly.

I'm away from my system at the moment, but I would open the nvidia-settings utility and look through the options there. If there's nothing there, then you'll have to get on Nvidia's site and find the options for the "nvidia-xconfig" command, which is used to overwrite the xorg.conf file -- maybe that's how you turn it off and on.

EDIT: Nope, no xorg.conf options shown here

Says here that Powermizer only controls the GeForce 8M series -- at least that's my interpretation of what it says. It must not be doing anything on mine, which is a desktop card.

        hello,

No I can assure you the quadroFx1600 is affected by powermizer
It's interesting to note I have no desktop effects enabled, all disabled nad yet wth performance 0 (default state) the window dragging is extra sluggish and it takes 2-3 seconds for it to pick up again (and performance climb to 2).

Maya works just fine now that I set the settings to maximum speed (it would be affected by the same issues with quality set to high).
I reckon powermizer doesn't affect gl applications with settings set to maximum speed

I could either find a way to disable it by leaving powermizer to performance 2 or perhaps I should look for the issue elsewhere, maybe this is caused by x not comunicating properly with powermizer?
These are the xorg.conf options out of my head as I'm not close to my linux laptop now.
        Option "AddARGBVisuals" "True"
        Option "CIOverlay" "on"
        Option "RenderAccel" "True"
        # AddRGBGLXVisuals disabled

Lastly I wanted to ask if it would be wise to force constant max performance on my laptop as I wonder if powermizer was put there for a reason ergo avoid frying gpus (max peformance clocks are 625mhz 800mhz)
I think limiting powermize to toggle between normal and high performance settings would work well (skipping low I mean) if only it was possible to do so..

Thanks for having a look into this.

Probably some combination of that and "green politics" for lack of a better term.

My Linux experience is limited to my big desktop rig -- I'm running the 169.12 driver, but no sign of the Powermizer on mine. If you also have Windows on that machine, you could see what the GPU & memory speed is on that OS, and then compare that to the Nvidia settings in Linux. You probably don't want to run it a lot faster in one OS than the other -- the thermal results are the same. If you don't know about controlling the GPU and memory speed with "Coolbits", I can tell you how, if you want to.
