nVidia drivers. Which is 'better'? Restricted or Proprietary?

I am using a laptop with nVidia GeForce 2 GO built in and I'm using the restricted nvidia-glx-legacy drivers. I have thought about installing the proprietary drivers but . . .

    1) I don't have build-essentials installed and don't want to add all that if I can avoid it.

    2) I have read that a kernel upgrade will break the restricted drivers unless you uninstall with Envy, upgrade the kernel, then re-install the drivers with Envy.

    3) My system seems to work just fine as it is.

Are there any substantial advantages of the proprietary drivers over the restricted drivers?

The truthful answer would be - it depends on the manufacturer and the driver. If the restricted driver provides all the benefits and features of the proprietary one, then the choice really comes down to this: will the proprietary driver work with the OS you are running, and do you want to use the proprietary driver?
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

If the drivers you are using now are working for you, I recommend leaving the system as is.
