    ATI Radeon 9200 Driver

    I need help!

I recently installed Compiz on my desktop, but soon realized that I needed 3D support to run the Desktop Cube. I searched all over Google, found a few "ATI driver installs" in Wikis, tried many of them, the last one I stumbled on was at about.com. I found it at http://linux.about.com/od/ubuntu_doc/a/ubudg19t6.htm. I followed the instructions, set my monitor settings at 1440X900 @100hz (my monitors optimum settings are 1440x900 @ 60hz), rebooted the computer, and now it boots directly to terminal, not KDE.

So, my questions are the following:

    1. How do I get my computer to boot back into KDE automaticly?

    2. How do I get the ATI graphics card working so I can use Compiz?

    Thanks in advance!!

    Re: ATI Radeon 9200 Driver

Ok, I got back into kde... but i still can't get the ati card working.

It's an ATI RV280 Radeon 9200. I found this by running $sudo lshw.

      Re: ATI Radeon 9200 Driver

I found it at http://linux.about.com/od/ubuntu_doc/a/ubudg19t6.htm. I followed the instructions,
      That link tells:
      Install the xorg-driver-fglrx
But by my knowledge: ATI Radeon 9250 PRO - 3D graphics at snails pace
      http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3089823.0

=> AMD (Ati) has dropped the (Linux) support for Radeon R200 based cards.

as said in the fglrx wiki
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fglrx
Version 8.29.6 ends support for Radeon R200 based cards (i.e., the series of Radeon 8500 through 9250).

How do I get the ATI graphics card working so I can use Compiz?
By using open source Ati drivers ?:

      xserver-xorg-video-ati
      X.Org X server -- ATI display driver
This driver for the X.Org X server (see xserver-xorg for a further description)
provides support for the ATI Mach, Rage, Radeon, and FireGL series. It
provides the 'atimisc', 'r128' and 'radeon' sub-drivers.

Note that this is not the same as the ATI-provided, binary-only, 'fglrx'
driver, which provides additional 3D functionality for some newer Radeon
      cards, but is not supported.

This driver provides support for Mach, Rage, Rage128, Radeon, and most
      FireGL series ATI cards.

      Maybe this helps:

      - It is for Ubuntu => gnome-compiz-manager vs. compiz-kde ?
