    need help formatting unpartitioned space

    Hi,

I'm new to Linux and I just installed 7.10 and everything is up and running properly. when I installed the following partitions were used:

    total ATA drive: 80 GB

space allocated to root: 10 GB
    space allocated for swap: 2GB
    space allocated for home: 35GB
    ---------------------------------------------
    total allocated space: 47GB
    remaining unpartitioned space: 33GB

now that everything is going right, I would like to format the remaining 33 GB of unpartitioned space of my drive that's idle right now.

I tried the GUI for Dolphin and it mentions nothing of the unpartitioned space.

my question is: How can I detect, partition, and format in 'ext3' the remaining space on my singe HD so I can use it in my Linux environment?

    please help!! Thank you.

my desktop sys: Lenovo AMD64 bit / 1GB Ram / 1 HD ATA

    Install and run gparted

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install gparted
This will allow you to format the unallocated space.

have you tried qtparted? if you don't have it installed, just go to your package manager, should be Adept if you're using kubuntu, then just search and download qtparted. after you've downloaded it should be in your menu, launch the application and you should see all your partitions. then all you should have to do is pick the one you want and format. i hope this works, i've just switched from GNOME/Ubuntu to KDE/Kubuntu, and it uses a similar program called gparted.

I recommend using gparted. qtparted has caused some issues for me in the past.

but if he's using kubuntu, it will download extra dependencies for gparted cause it's a gnome app

I use gParted myself. You can download it from Distrowatch, then burn it to a CD using K3B. Then boot your computer from the CD. Make sure your BIOS is set up to boot from CD first.

That is right but it is better than haveing a borked partition table

                Hi,

Thank you so much for your help and sorry I wasn't specific. I'm using Kubuntu 7.10.

ok, so I installed qtparted and it looked great. it saw the unpartitioned space and I was about to create a new partition, however, I do not see the option to format in ext3. The only options are ext2, FAT-32/16, and Swap. How do I format it in ext3?

                thanks again.

Uh-boy -- I doubt you're looking for a third opinion, but here's my "never fails" method:

                  1. Download the ISO and make yourself a GParted Live CD, from here:

                  http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...kage_id=173828

Get ver. -10, there are reports of bugs in ver. -11.

                  2. Boot your GParted Live CD and use that to make the partition and format it. It has all the filesystem formats, but you're well advised to stick with ext3.

                  3. Now boot your Kubuntu Live CD or Alternate Install CD (my favorite) and use that to install Kubuntu. You don't even have to format that partition again, but it won't hurt anything if you do.

                    Hi dibl,

my knowledge are very limited in linux, so you mean that I have to re-install Kubuntu after I partition the remaining space on my drive? because I already have installed. and that took some time for me

is there another way to use qtparted, format in ext2 then re-format in ext3 using the Disk & Filesystems program? or something like that? because I saw that option there.

                    thanks.

No no, I thought were trying to reinstall Kubuntu. If you only want the partition formatted, then do #1 and #2 as I wrote, and then you will need instruction on how to mount that partition in Kubuntu. We can help you after you have it formatted ext3.
