screen flickers when i run certain programs

My screen flickers when I run certain programs. The programs include VLC, Battle For Wesnoth, Freeciv, Icebreaker, Frozen Bubble, visualizations in amarok, The Mana World.

My Display Adapter is Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 315PRO PCI/AGP VGA Display Adapter.
    Resolution is set at 1280 x 1024
    Monitor is Compaq CV735

its really hard to play these games with the screen flickering every few seconds. It's also very hard on my eyes.

    please help me fix this!

    Thanks in advance

I noticed this as well during Unreal Tournament 2004 - not always though.

I noticed the same thing when playing videos, especially high resolution. In my case if I turn off compiz with "kwin -- replace" the flicker dissapears and all videos play normally.

I have bad information - for this card is no way to get 3D accelaration
(in GNU/Linux) and without it you can't run Compiz Fusion (Desktop Effects...).
I have found this inforamtion on internet (trustful source)...

Re: screen flickers when i run certain programs

Compiz / Desktop effect usually make my videos and Wesnoth flicker. As miciurin pointed out, try disabling anything 3D. I don't know what exactly does GLcore do, maybe I'm way off, but it's an idea.

ok it didn't flicker when i upgraded to 8.04 until i turned the screensaver on.
when i turned off the screensaver, it stopped flickering. anyone have an explanation for this? I'm just curious.

                          try sudo apt-get remove xgl
                          if xgl is installed.
