    NVIDIA Restricted Drivers

So, I run Kubuntu on a sort of newish eMachine (about 4 years old). I put an NVIDIA GForce 6600 graphics card in it before I installed Kubunu. Ever since I installed Gutsy I have been using the "NVIDIA Restricted Drivers", however I tried to update them the other day to the latest NVIDIA Drivers. Now, when I boot my computer, it boots into console login. When I try to fire up X-Server manually, it tells me that "Screens are found, but none have a usable configuration." Then it gives me a fatal server error and tells me that "No screens are found".

I've reviewed some of the fixes for this problem, but cannot get any of them to work. I have managed to get X-Server up, but I had to disable my NVIDIA drivers. Is there a way that I can get the newest NVIDIA drivers to work with my computer? If not, how would I restore my original drivers? I would like to know because without the NVIDIA drivers, my computer tends to huff and puff and crash whenever I ask anything graphically challenging of it.

    Thanks,

    Lightbulbjb

    Re: NVIDIA Restricted Drivers

I'd stay away from the restricted drivers. People have seen a ton of success with using Envy. Using Envy fixed all my nVidia problems.

Go to: http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html to download Envy

And then use the nvidia-settings (System menu) to set the monitor resolution. It makes a nice, small file - while System Settings are making looooooong xorg.conf files. The only annoying thing is, the proper closing on the nvidia-settings has to be found by right-clicking on the top bar of the window.
