    Getting my wifi to work

Tried running a search to find this problem with no luck, so here goes a new post.

I have an Acer Aspire 5100 with an Atheros AR5006EG wifi card in it. Unlike with my friend's laptop, the wifi care did not immediately work after installing ubuntu - though, with the use of ndiswrapper and ndisgtk, I was able to make it work.

I decided, however, that I do not like GNOME and so have switched to kubuntu (7.10) - I like the whole setup much better except for the fact that ndisgtk does not work. I do not know why, I installed it exactly as I did before, clicking on it results in there being a little 'working' symbol and an icon popping up in the taskbar - for a few moments, after which it goes away. The window never opens.

I would use ndiswrapper straight from the konsole but frankly I do not know how, and I have not been able to find a helpful guide. I ran the commandline “sudo ndiswrapper -i net5416.inf” which is supposed to do it, but apparently I have the net5416.inf file in the wrong place - and I dont know where its supposed to go. This is the guide I used for ubuntu - http://quilombo.wordpress.com/2008/0...-gutsy-gibbon/

So, can someone either tell me how to get ndisgtk working or install the driver straight out of console? Thanks.

You have an Atheros wifi card. You don't need to use ndiswrapper.

Just start KnetworkManager (K Menu | Internet | KNetworkManager)
This will put a white thumb drive looking icon in your system tray. Right-click it and select the wireless network you want to use. This will open another window where you need to enter the networks SSID. You need to uncheck the box that allows you to see the SSID you are typing. Then click the apply/ok button and you should be set.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

If the above reply still doesn't work, then to get NDiswrapper working again, you can try the following.

The "net5416.inf" should be directly in your "/home/<yourname>" folder.

You could use the tilde key, '~' instead of typing it out fully. Ndiswrapper is not smart enough to be able to find it elsewhere, unless you tell it where to look. It usually looks in the folder you are in. Which is '~' by default.

To find out why NDisGTK is not working, try running it in a Konsole, and see what output it gives. It should give a more detailed error message, to indicate what is wrong.

It may need some more Gnome/Ubuntu files to be installed. But yeah, The Atheros chipset should work without NDiswrapper.
