    Can't access /dev/hda in g or qtparted

I have 2 hard drives one is IDE /dev/hda the other SATA /dev/sda. When I run gparted or qtparted I can access and work on /dev/sda but when I try to access /dev/hda I get this error:

    Critical error during ped_disk_new!

What could be wrong? And how do I fix it? I also can't access it with partition managers on, for instance, Kubuntu install dvd. That's a problem.

This happened after editing /dev/sda on System Rescue CD with QTParted.

    (1) I would try to disconnect the sda drive, then boot from GParted Live CD, and see if it will see your hda drive. (Can also use the tab at the top: GParted > Refresh Devices).

    (2) Do not ever use QtParted -- always use GParted instead. (Just my opinion after reading forums and posts like yours for 3 years.)

    (3) Google turns up lots on this QtParted error: Critical error during ped_disk_new!
You might have a look first to see if anything applies to your case.
