    Firestarter fails to run automatically

Since I switched to the latest version of Kubuntu, most times when I start the computer I see a red "failed" response on the list of actions printing to the screen prior to the desktop long on window. I have to manually run the firewall. I'm guessing this has something to do with permissions. How do I get the firewall program to run as part of the start up process?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

The firewall runs as a Service. When you boot up, it is running. You only need to open it from the menu's if you are going to make a change.

Thank you. Your reply gave me the clue I needed to alter the start up option in the services tab.

Well, that half worked! NOw when I boot, services shows the Firestarter starts at boot; but it also shows that it is not running. So I still have to load it manually.

        Any ideas?

Firestarter is not the firewall itself...the service script runs during boot (well actually when network comes up), does it's job (sets the firewall rules you have chosen) and quits...it's not supposed to run continuously. The actual traffic blocking is handled by the built in iptables/netfilter firewall.

Thanks for the explanation. I gues I'm still a bit gun shy from Windows where the firewall etc. has to run all the time to provide protection.

Well the firewall 'runs' all the time, it's just built into the kernel...software like firestarter (or guarddog or kmyfirewall) are just tools for easy configuration of the firewall.

You can test your firewall with tools like 'shields up' (if you're 'gun shy' ):

That's OK. It takes time for folks to be de-programmed from Windows. Stick with it.
