8800GTS Fan maxed when driver loaded

I've noticed that as soon as the NVidia driver is loaded when booting into Gutsy, the fan on my 8800 GTS switches to max. While this is probably only a noisy nuisance, I do worry about wear and would appreciate any tips if there is a way to throttle it down to a reasonable level.

Thanks in advance,

My 8800GTS also speeds up at the first login, but within a few minutes it throttles back down (assuming I'm not spinning the Earth in fullscreen mode with Google Earth ). I don't think it's stressing your card unless it runs continuously when you are not pushing it.

Thanks
Think mine is on pretty much all the time, which it wasn't under feisty far as I know, its running at a cool 56C as a result...
Perhaps its due to me running dual screens with Compiz Fusion? Still, did the same before with Beryl under Feisty and didn't run maxxed... bizarre....
ah well :P
so no fix then I take it? As in a manual throttle tool or sorts?

That's not bad -- mine runs in the mid-50s all the time. I don't know of a "knob" with which to control the fan directly -- it's going to run as needed to maintain the safe temperature. It would be interesting to see whether it behaves differently with a different OS running -- you can do the experiment and let us know.

can you not throttle it back user the GPU settings under nvidia-settings?
Using:
Mint Kubuntu 7.10 (kde4 dual core 2.2ghz 4gb)
Freenas (nx6325 hp laptop)
Mint Gnome 7.10 (EEE Pc 4g white 1 gb ram)
