ATI fglrx higher screen size resolution than 1280x1024

    hi,
i have a ASUS M6VA with a ati mobility radeon X700. i used Envy to install the proper drivers. the problem is that i can't get a resolution higher than 1280x1024 and my monitor supports 1400x1050, but the 3D acceleration works.
in xorg.conf if i use ati driver instead of fglrx i cant get 1400x1050 but no 3D acceleration.

    any suggestions are wellcome.

Back up /etc/X11/xorg.conf and execute "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg", making sure you choose the fglrx driver and your preferred resolutions.
(Some people have trouble with it, so I might as well tell you: space toggles the selected resolution, enter accepts.)

EDIT: Oh wait. Make sure that the current version of the driver actually supports your card, too...
    For external use only.

If Envy installs AMD Catalyst 7.12 Linux Driver then it could be:

      Known Issues

Connecting a display device that supports 1680x1050 to a system running Linux may result in a maximum display resolution of 1280x1024 only being available
      snap
(I have this problem, waiting 8.1 or will it be 8.01. Now using 7.11)

      makoto42 tells:
The good thing is they added the Mobility FireGL support, so my T60p 'works' out of the box.

The bad, my 1400x1050 screen is now stuck at 1280x1024. Further bad, it won't sleep. Beyond that, compiz I can't get to work with AIGLX anymore. And they didn't fix the diagonal tearing pattern.

Congratulations, AMD/ATi, you *can't* seem to possibly manage a release that doesn't break things along the way... Being stuck at a non-native resolution and no suspending is incredibly bad.

i ran "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" and chose 1400x1050, still no good.

because of the known issues in the release notes of the version 7.12, i also installed catalyst 7.11 like Rog131. i have the resolution i want, but no hardware aceleration.

Re: ATI fglrx higher screen size resolution than 1280x1024

I suffered from this, now I have my full resolutions back, using 8.1 fglrx.

After installation back up your old Xorg.conf file just in case

          and simply do

          sudo aticonfing --initial -f

restart X and hey presto, up to 1600 x 1200 for me.

Now to solve Xorg running away, freezing the system on logout and having to ssh in to reboot the damn thing.

AMD/Ati AMD Proprietary Linux Release Notes (Catalyst 8.2) tells:
The Xserver no longer freezes on shutdown if atieventsd is running.
But it is still freezing (at here). Fix is to remove atieventsd:

I ended up removing the atieventsd and it works fine now.
