New Monitor-- out of range message ----Now Fixed

    Hi, (See Below)
Just got a new monitor Benq FP22W-B LCD monitor max 1680x1050 res.
Previous monitor ran at 1440x900 and now I get a message out of range with Gutsy Gibbon.
I run an older Abit RX300 SE (Radeon-ATI)
How can T edit xorg.conf or something with this situation.
I was thinking maybe a live CD edit like from Knoppix, I doubt that the gutsy live cd would help.
ctrl-alt-delete logs out but I can't even get to a terminal screen.
    Any help here much appreciated.

Oh by the way Mint 4.0 adjusts this monitor automagically, wish Gutsy could do the same.
Debian Lenny gave a distorted screen but I was able to logon go to 1024x768 resolution and edit xorg.conf successfully
    Cheers

Hmm - have you tried live CD ? If it works: just copy xorg.conf from the live session to the /etc/X11/...

    Then

New xorg.conf with default options a.k.a the easiest way
    As said in the xorg.conf:
    # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
    # again, run the following command:
    # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
    You know something about hardware:
    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
This reconfigures xorg (ask questions - what you want to do) and makes backup.

Here is good page of sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg:
    http://users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzone/p7.html

You could try to rename/remove xorg.conf and start without xorg.conf.
    From Xorg release 7.2
    http://www.x.org/wiki/Releases/7.2?a...angesForX11R73
Autoconfiguration: The X server can now start without an xorg.conf file in most cases.

Re: New Monitor-- out of range message ----Now Fixed

Thanx Rog131 for your concern and advice.

I used Knoppix 5.1 to rename xorg.conf and then gutsy booted with an orphaned module and no entry in system settings, monitor.
I then booted the live gutsy cd, copied xorg.conf from here to a usb pen-drive, as it had the correct 1680x1050 settings.
I had to do this, as the live Gutsy CD refused to mount the HDD, a Hal sudo problem.
Gutsy live CD is nowhere near as useful as Knoppix 5.1, due to the lack of a true root terminal, fallout from the sudo problem, and fear of true root GUI priviledges.
I then booted the installation and copied xorg.conf to etc/X11/ as true root, and hey presto,--- fixed on reboot with no more orphan stuff and correct resolution 1680x1050.
      No further repair necessary.
Hopefully---- K(ubuntu) will endeavor to make this all automagic on monitor change, instead of being so convoluted, in future releases, or even give a fix like Mint 4.0 has achieved.

When booting the LiveCD, you can always hit F6 (or is it F8?) at the menu and add the "single" option, which will drop you into a root shell... You can also do a "startx" from there to open a root KDE session.
I wouldn't normally recommend something like that, but it's a LiveCD, so it's okay.
        For external use only.

          Hi SheeEttin,
thanx for the tips, but unfortunately nowhere near as transparent as the Knoppix live cd.
Knoppix makes it a lot easier to achieve a gui text edit with Kate or Kedit, as root, which, lets face it, one really needs to fix major issues like this, not silly old (unfirewalled) sudo.

Nano, vim, emacs etc are fine, but convoluted and difficult for new users to fix anything.
They would give up in despair using Kubuntu live alone, or indeed a root shell to fix this fundamental hardware glitch or even backup valuable data.

Believe it or not, fixing fundamental things like this using a reasonably tranparent live cd interface is probably one of the big issues keeping (K)ubuntu, and Linux in general, off new users desktops.
