epson c84 printing blank test page

    hi,

I've upgraded to Gutsy and am trying to install my epson c84 printer, but can't get it to print the test page. It comes out blank.

    Any thoughts?
    thanks

EDIT: I also noted that the EPSON and Canon printers aren't there anymore. Maybe it has to do with that?

Did you install the package "foomatic-db-gutenprint"?

Hmmmmmmmmmm. I have a Stylus C84 also, and it prints just fine. I'm away from my system at this moment, but tonight after work I'll look into it and see if there's anything useful I can share.

            thanks

I've even tried to get the ink levels working but it seems as if it can't find them (it hangs) - I even gave the application the possibility to read and write....

I was reading other forums and I think I'm missing a file ..

            ~/.cups/lpoptions
Can it be or am I wrong?

I don't think you can do any damage re-installing CUPS.

OK, here are the foomatic packages that I have installed:

                foomatic-db
                foomatic-db-engine
                foomatic-db-gutenprint
                foomatic-db-hpijs
                foomatic-filters

Also, foo2zjs, although that doesn't look relevant to an Epson. For CUPS, I have

                cups-pdf
                cupsys
                cupsys-bsd
                cupsys-client
                cupsys-common

Like I said earlier, you won't do any damage by marking these for re-installation. For reasons unknown, over the past weekend I had to re-install Open Office and Adept Manager -- I've never needed to do that before, but that's all it took to fix them.

I guess I have to reinstall everything because all the packages that you listed are there.

How do I re-install? Is it best using kdesu or going through adept?

                  thanks

If you right-click on the package in Adept Manager, you can choose "reinstall". That's probably the easiest.

BTW, I don't think I've ever been able to see the ink levels with the gutenprint drivers -- so don't expect that.

I'll give it a try. BTW : I noticed that when I installed the printer, the epson/canon printers on the first page (where you're asked about printer connection : LPT,USB, etc..) are not there. Is that a problem?

In fiesty my ink levels worked. You should try to see whether "escuptil" has the read/write option. If I remember correctly, that was my problem in fiesty.

                      thanks

Hmmmm -- yeah, maybe. When you do "Add>Printer/Class" then you should see a "tree" of USB connections and your Epson Stylus C84 should appear there. Then when you click it, in a strange step that I've never understood, you go to a screen that makes you choose the manufacturer of your printer (I think the programmers probably understand this, but I don't). So, in the left window you choose "Epson", then the right window presents you with all possible Epson models, and you choose the Stylus C84. After that, you choose which driver to use, then it's straight to the test page, followed by the banners and naming pages.

Interesting -- yes, I'll give that a look tonight. It would be handy to get a clue before the black runs dry, especially. Thanks!

Nope...they're not there and I think that it may be the problem but I can't figure out how to get it in.

                            What does
                            Code:
                            lsusb
                            say about your USB devices?

It isn't necessary, I'm using the serial port (LPT#1).

Off topic : lsusb will be useful after I get the printer working. I want to hook up a neww webcam and headset that I bought yesterday. :P
