    Biostar Motherboard GeForce6100-M9 video

Just wondering if anyone has any idea why the video randomly wiggs out on the Biostar Motherboard GeForce6100-M9 drawing diagonal lines on monitor then locks everything?
    Anyone?
    Thanks

Could you try describing that again?
Better yet, how about a picture?

Well I made some corrections in my post. What ever is going on it maxes both cores because when you reboot the cpu temp is 60-63C (normal < 40C) I'm using the nVidia drivers.

That's too hot! I get nervous when my Core 2 Extreme goes over 50, which does happen when I give it 2 audio files to encode. But it should mostly stay in the 40s.

I'd say look at the basics -- have you run the memtest86 on your memory, for like 5 passes? Is the CPU cooler correctly installed -- I use an Arctic Cooler Pro on mine, with Arctic Silver thermal paste.

As far as what appears on your monitor, it is entirely determined by your Nvidia card. So you need the Nvidia driver installed correctly -- does nvidia-settings show it functioning fully?

Dah [8=] it only gets hot after lock up and I'm not here to reboot. It's not the cooler.

does nvidia-settings show it functioning fully?
What should I look for? It LOOKs ok to me.

            Re: Biostar Motherboard GeForce6100-M9 video

I'd guess overheating of the video card.
Of course, that doesn't mean the video card is the one generating your heat; in fact, your mention of both CPU cores being maxed out suggests that could be the problem.

Tried looking at your logs to determine the problem?

We can only give limited help without having physical access. This is just one of those problems. Hopefully you can work it out by intuition and little clues.

I understand, that's why I want to find someone to brainstorm with. On the heat thing don't get confused my cpu runs about36-38C but when the video wiggs out the HD light goes solid on (why I have no clue) and something must max the cores because if I don't reboot in say 10 Min when you do reboot it's 63C I need to figure out why the video goes nuts then the rest won't be a problem. I did see another post on the same problem but no answers and it's an old post.

                Re: Biostar Motherboard GeForce6100-M9 video

If you can satisfy yourself that the Nvidia driver is installed and working correctly, then I'm afraid I would suspect the CPU or motherboard chipset -- something is obviously malfunctioning. The fact that the hdd light goes on and the CPU goes to max makes me wonder if it is actually a problem on the motherboard (CPU, chipset, memory), rather than just the video -- perhaps the video malfunction is a secondary symptom, not the main problem.

So, which Nvidia driver is installed? If you open a console window and enter
                Code:
                nvidia-settings
the Nvidia utility that pops up will show the driver version.

Also, does glxgears run? If so, one would conclude that the driver is doing a good job, and the problem must therefore be hardware, not software.

By the way, can you run
                Code:
                top
in a console window (just start it and leave it running), so you can see what process seems to be using all the CPU when it goes bonkers?

Hope this helps you troubleshoot it a bit more.

Forget top when this happens the screen looks like some one threw a can of paint on the screen till reboot.

nvidia-settings says nVidia driver is 100.14.19

glx gears seem ok about 950 fps

                    Re: Biostar Motherboard GeForce6100-M9 video

The Nvidia driver looks right, and glxgears runs right, so you can cross that off the list of possible issues.

You don't have the strigi-daemon running, do you? If you do, un-install the strigi package and reboot your system.

If it's not strigi, I am out of ideas -- I would say it's most likely a hardware fault of some kind.

                      Well

                      Code:
                      ps -A| grep strigi
found nada but I uninstalled it anyway as I don't use it. Funny I ran NimbleX on cd for a week using the Nvida desktop and didn't have this trouble. I'll try memcheck when I have time.

                        Re: Biostar Motherboard GeForce6100-M9 video

I have noticed that, like last night when I came back from class, I moved the mouse and everything seemed fine but when I clicked on anything in the task bar nothing came up (now I didn't get the paint splatter screen this time so I could see the gkrellm) I noticed the cpu was spiking starting when I moved the mouse and gkrellm top showed it was xorg. I've also noticed xorg running 50%+ several times so just to see if it helps I killed my beloved superkramba liquid weather three month cal amarok control and Garfield to see if it wiggs again. I'll let you know.
                        Thanks
