DVD drive taken hostage by Gremlins

This happens every time I burn a DVD. I ma using k3b.
After burning the DVD the drive disappears.
Can not remove the disk because the icon on the desktop is gone so can't eject.
I can't remove it by pressing the button on the outside of the drive either.
If I do a a mount command, I don't get any errors but it does no good in bringing back the drive, still nothing works.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you in advance.

Have you tried using the lazy option in umount? It's umount -l devicename. It does an unmount even if there's some kind of error. Worked for me when I've had a problem like that before. Course, it sounds like some other problem and that would really only be a workaround if it even works at all.
I know I'd check the connections on the burner and also see about booting a livecd, loading it onto the ramdisk, mounting the hdd and burning using that livecd's burning utility to see if maybe it's a problem only relating to how your system is currently configured.

      Thanks will try your recommendations.
This issue is really maddening because the only way to get it to work again is to reboot. Well as far as I know for now.

      Thank you will post findings.

You are not running the Asus 1608 drive by any chance are you?
I have found this to be an absolute bitch of a drive, have had long history of problems with this drive under Win XP, Vista. Had to reboot after every time that I wrote a disc.
Best solution I found? See how far you can throw that bastard drive and install an LG unit.
You don't need a license to drive a sandwich.

            No, it's not that.
The drive is a HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-H30L, HP system, without taking the case apart don't know who the manufacturer is.
I have looked on the web and there appeared to be some problems with drivers last year, nothing current, and it did work on fine in 7.04. It works well other than the disappearing act.
I do have a Sony DVD RW DRU-710A that since 6.10 has not functioned as a cd. Works with dvd's but not with cd's.
Don't know if it's *buntu specific or not.
I'll have to try the Sony, haven't checked out how it does buring dvd's in 7.10.
So much to check and so little time.
