I had a very similar problem with my laptop (also a Toshiba). A lot have people have been working on this and trying to fix this but this is how i achieved success.

navigate to "/ect/modprobe.d/alsa-base" open it with a text editor.

    append
    Code:
    options snd-hda-intel model=auto
to the end of the file.

    Reboot and that should work.

I have a Toshiba Satellite P105. To get sound working on it, I have to add acpi=off to the end of the kernel lines in /boot/grub/menu.lst

This is what it looks like in mine:
      kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20-16-generic root=UUID=a2357a43-de81-4157-91ff-4fe745f01a79 ro splash acpi=off
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.
