Yep it's gone.
I'm in the process of getting it claimed on warranty. Fortunately no important info was lost as I am now using my 40gb hard drives again. I've learned enough through this yucky process that when I get a new hdd I'll just reinstall 7.10.
I've learned a lot, btw, and I have all your efforts at helping me very useful. I know how to use Kubuntu better as result, even though the problems were not solved. Thanks muchly.
