      Downloading now...
(Yes, this takes precedence over homework.)

EDIT: Had to install a few times, but it worked after I removed and reloaded the module. Dunno why, I did reboot...
Anyway, I do have AIGLX working! Now to figure out this new-fangled Compiz thing.
      For external use only.

        And when using
        Option "TexturedVideo" "True"
        in the xorg.conf:

        X-Video Extension version 2.2
        screen #0
Adaptor #0: "ATI Radeon AVIVO Video"

        depth 24, visualID 0x24
        depth 24, visualID 0x25
        depth 24, visualID 0x26
        ...
        maximum XvImage size: 4096 x 4096
        Number of image formats: 2

Re: AMD (Ati) 8.42.3 is out

I read about it on slashdot (I know, not exactly the best source), seems like it doesn't support the XComposite extension yet, so no compiz without xgl.

Again, unconfirmed info from slashdot, treat with care.

            Michael Larabel:
AMD 8.42 Driver Brings Fixes, AIGLX!

Now onto arguably the most sought after feature... AIGLX. It's been a long time coming, and it's here today, but there are a few words of caution. Be forewarned that there is a bug in Compiz 0.3 affecting the fglrx 8.42.3 driver and there may be a few other situations where Compiz or Compiz Fusion may not work immediately. The bug found in Compiz 0.3 and that's causing havoc with fglrx 8.42.3, has been resolved in Compiz 0.6. Next month in fglrx 8.43, AMD will be introducing a workaround for Compiz 0.3 support. If you try enabling the "desktop effects" in Fedora 7 with fglrx 8.42.3, it will fail. However, if you install Beryl or Compiz Fusion on Fedora 7 from a repository, it should work.
            and
At Phoronix we have tested Ubuntu 7.10 "Gutsy Gibbon" quite extensively with the fglrx 8.42 series and have found it to work well with Compiz Fusion and its default effects. Whether you're using Ubuntu or another distribution, be sure to add "fglrx" to the Compiz driver white list, if needed.
            But

            New fglrx 8.42.3 to Gutsy
            https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...er/+bug/156325
            Giovanni Lovato

I think we can wait a better release or buy a graphic card other than AMD/ATI.
This fglrx 8.42.3 supports AIGLX but it's 50% slower than XGL.
            I'm turning back to 8.37.6 + XGL!
            and
            John Dong

            HEADS UP:

This release is not "perfect" and may be a regression from previous releases. Phoronix reports mixed success, not to mention xorg.conf needs to change a bit (un-disable composite extensions), video flickering in Compiz, and Compiz needing backporting.

Please be careful and get plenty of feedback before doing this as a Gutsy LRM update...

As far as I can see this driver does not support the radeon 9250 series. Can anyone confirm that. I wish it would

                  Hmm - i don't think so.

I have seen a rumor/news that AMD will drop support for R300 (Ati 9600) or older cards in the coming year.

                      With 9600 it was just:

                      Download ati-driver-installer-8.42.3-x86.x86_64.run

                      Install necessary tools:
                      sudo apt-get update
                      sudo apt-get install module-assistant build-essential fakeroot dh-make debhelper debconf libstdc++5 linux-headers-$(uname -r)

                      Create .deb packages:
                      sudo bash ati-driver-installer-8.42.3-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/gutsy

                      Install .deb packages:
                      sudo dpkg -i xorg-driver-fglrx_8.42.3-1*.deb
                      sudo dpkg -i fglrx-kernel-source_8.42.3-1*.deb
                      sudo dpkg -i fglrx-amdcccle_8.42.3-1*.deb

Remove any old fglrx debs from /usr/src/:
                      sudo rm /usr/src/fglrx-kernel*.deb

                      Fix broken dependencies
                      sudo apt-get -f install

                      Compile the kernel module:
                      sudo module-assistant prepare
                      sudo module-assistant update
                      sudo module-assistant build fglrx
                      sudo module-assistant install fglrx
                      sudo depmod -a

                      Remove from xorg.conf
                      Code:
                      Section "Extensions"
                      	Option "Composite"	"0"
                      EndSection
                      and
                      Code:
                      	Option "AIGLX"	"false"
                      Restart
