display settings won't stick

i did a fresh install of gutsy & now i can't get my display settings to stay at 800 x 600. after reboot, they change back to 1024 x 768. i've tried the dpkg -reconfigure thing & editing the xorg file(which has always worked for me in the past). anyone have any other ideas.

i tried the dpkg -reconfigure thing until I got something out of whack enough that x wouldn't start, so I re-installed Gutsy. This time, when I edited the xorg.conf file, it worked.
