Ubuntu is not friends with my microphone

The mic on my headset is not working. I'm using ALSA, and the mic is turned on, up, and umuted in alsamixer. Mic is slecected as "CAPTUR", and line in is "FRONT MIKE". Yet `rec test.ogg` hangs when it starts, audacity shows no activity, etc. I've tested the mic under Windows, so I know that it works. And I'm incredibly sad that I can't use it under Linux. I've been through dozens of threads, trying every fix I could find - installing the latest ALSA from source, creating .asound files in $HOME... I've had no success at all so far.

I'm really frustrated that I was able to get a wiimote working on Ubuntu easier than I can get this simple mic working...so please help? This is something I have to have, and I really don't want to reinstall a windows partition on my machine.

Do you have a volume control labeled "Capture" (or maybe record or something along those lines)?

My KMix window has three tabs, the capture control is on the "input" tab.

If you prefer to use alsamixer, use the "tab" key to get to the capture page.

It might well help if you could say what sound card you are using. Mine is a SoundBlaster Live, so the channels may be called something different on your system.
