A suggestion - if i may be so bold....
I read in a thread concerning the loss of the wastebin, that the reason for it to no longer be on the desktop is that Mark Shuttleworth wanted the desktop to initially be clean.
If i may say so, this is easily achieved, i have three panels, the main one which is at the top of the screen - and contains most of the usual icons, and one at either side, on the left one are game applications, and on the right one are applications such as Kontact, Kpilot, Firefox, Thunderbird, Wastebin, etc.
The panels are transparent, and auto-hide - all i can see is the wall-paper...... the desktop is cleaner than my floor.
