Dolphin should NOT have tabs
If you planning on using KDE 4 (I know a lot of people are disappointed with it now, that's why I said 'if') Than get used to dolphin 'emulation' in Konqueror as it will now use the Dolphin core for file management in KDE 4.
As for the debate here I personally think Dolphin not only doesn't need tabs, but shouldn't have them at all. Reason one is that tabs get in the way of my everyday file management (OMG I just felt like 100 people gasp at once). I never used tabs in Konqueror, even in Fiesty, for file management, only for browsing. I like split view because I can visually see where I'm placing things. Oh and Split View can be easily toggled on and off in D3lphin by pressing F10, that's good enough for me. The only feature I ever liked in Konqueror was tree view and infinite split views. Infinite split views doesn't seem to be a priority for Dolphin devs though, but they do have the tree view available in the KDE 4 version, I've seen it and it works great!
But I really say we should end this DAMNED DEBATE. Just say you don't like Dolphin because of tabs and end it! It really doesn't matter. Linux is about choice, if you don't like Dolphin because it doesn't have tabs you are entitled to not use it. That's why Konqueror is still there. It may not be default in Kubuntu Gutsy anymore, but that is an easy fix, so stop complaining and go back to Konqueror.
I personally love Dolphin and I could see why it is the default now. It is made for simple file management and as such it is much faster than Konqueror making it great for most users. It also has features which KDE 3.5.x versions of Konqueror don't have, like breadcrumbs. I missed that feature when I switched from Gnome to KDE 3 back in Fiesty.
Of course Konqueror, as I remember it, as fetures that Dolphin doesn't have to, like tabs, and infinite split views. Really, as I said, this is only about options. Use the file manager you like better and don't complain when another one comes out.
