System Settings

Hi,

one of the first things I do after a new install is edit KMenu and reset System Settings to point to kcontrol in order to get the "normal" control centre up. I find the mac style GUI of the Kubuntu System Settings totally confusing (and I have worked with apple macs and know kde fairly well). Nor does the search function come up with many enlightening features (which beats me, 'cos that can't have been written separately).

I would therefore propose that Kubuntu revert back to the "old" style interface. It just is easier to operate.

I'm not too fond on systemsettings either, though this might be due to the fact that I've gotten used to kcontrol and how it works.

(Of course it helps that I know where to find everything in kcontrol, it might seem confusing at first...the search feature helps greatly if you know what you're looking for)

i'm not making any judgments here, but i'm just gonna air my thoughts...

but i don't know why ppl complain about ss/kcontrol one way or the other. they're basically the same thing just arranged/layout differently and have the same exact functionality. if you don't like one, use the other.

i have used mac os since before osx and up until about 10.4 and thought/think the system preferences are fine. i have used windows from win95-xp (including 2000 advanced server) and thought/think that windows' control panel was/is not as nice but adequate. i have used gnome in the past in a couple different distros. about a year ago i switched completely to kubuntu. i personally don't have a preference using system settings over kcontrol or vice versa. i actually use both. i use system settings at times and i also have the kontrol center applet on my kicker cuz i like being able to access a certain module quickly from there.

those are just my thoughts regarding this subject. i'm just making an observation, not condemning anyone/anything...

Yep - which means (to me) that the System Settings are redundant.

Definitely not - KDE's original Control Center contains more modules.

I thinik you guys are fighting a losing battle here. One of the key features of the (*)buntu look and feel is simplifying the user interface so that newbies do not feel overwhelmed. Personally, I like the original kcontrol better than System Settings because I like to tweak my system, and that's easier in kcontrol than in System Settings, but this distro, tries to break people in gently and SS is definitely better for that.

Agreed - but, as I dare to say, improving "what already is there" (as e.g. the Kanotix guys had done, a long time ago ...) would have been much more intelligent than trying to "replace" it.

I also prefer kcontrol. I open it in the terminal with the command kdesu kcontrol. That way I don't constantly get bugged to click on "Administrator Mode" every time I want to change a setting. Maybe they should offer another button in System Settings that will take you to the full kcontrol. Click on the "Advanced" tab and then a button labeled "More Advanced".
