I am also suffering this problem. I can play non-MP3 files in Kaffiene, but this is ning so far for ot ideal. Please advise on installing MP3 support in FEisty. Searching the Web provides answers for Hoary and Dapper, but nothing so far for Feisty.
Found the solution. Use Adept to install mpeglib and Amarok will play MP3s.

Ok, adding the media libraries (such as mpeglib) manually fixes the problem.
But is this a Kubuntu bug or have I come to the wrong house and is this a amarok bug?

Just for the books. Installing mpeglib did not fix the problem for me. Only after installing libxine-extracodecs amarok played mp3s on my system without crashing as described.
Hi All
I looked at the directories on several Audio CD I have and found out that they have several formats to play.
In the defaults directory (root) are the WAV files, in the directories are CDA, FLAC, MP3, and Ogg Vorbis.
Do a Google search for more information about each format. They are a lot of sites for more info about each format.
I checked the file size for Bon Jovi - Keep the Faith - CD
for the file "I Believe"
in WAV it is 58.8 MB
in CDA it is 58.8 MB
in FLAC it is 36.6 MB
in MP3 it is 5.3 MB
in Ogg it os 4.4 MB
You have to decide which format you want you use and listen to.
Good Luck and have fun listening to the different formats
