    AirCrack-NG Installation

just installed Ubuntu 10.10 64bit yesterday. downloaded and installed AirCrack-NG for wireless testing at my office.

the installation came back with the following error:

E: language-selector-common: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2
    E: language-selector: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

my question is, is this something that will cause problems, or should i just ignore it?

    thanks!

Is the aircrack-ng package not in the 10.10 repositories? On 11.04, I have

    Code:
    don@natty-vm:~$ sudo apt-cache policy aircrack-ng
    [sudo] password for don:
    aircrack-ng:
     Installed: (none)
     Candidate: 1:1.1-1.1
     Version table:
       1:1.1-1.1 0
        500 [url]http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/[/url] natty/universe i386 Packages
You would probably have no such error if you installed the repo package.

      Re: AirCrack-NG Installation

i admit, i am very new to the world of Linux usage of this sort.

so, the repo package that you're referring to, is something that i do not know about.

just fyi - i did try installing it via the Synaptic Package Manager initially - the most recent version 1:1.1-1. got that error noted above.

went through the process of removing the 'language-selector' and re-installed Aircrack-NG - no error. but, i cannot see how to get AirCrack-NG operational.

so, at this point, i am going step by step with the following process:

      http://www.aircrack-ng.org/doku.php?id=install_aircrack

unfortunately, now i am getting the following error:

install: cannot create regular file `/usr/local/bin/aircrack-ng': Permission denied
install: cannot create regular file `/usr/local/bin/airdecap-ng': Permission denied
install: cannot create regular file `/usr/local/bin/packetforge-ng': Permission denied
install: cannot create regular file `/usr/local/bin/ivstools': Permission denied
install: cannot create regular file `/usr/local/bin/kstats': Permission denied
install: cannot create regular file `/usr/local/bin/makeivs-ng': Permission denied
install: cannot create regular file `/usr/local/bin/airdecloak-ng': Permission denied

so, needless to say, i am beyond my knowledge with Linux.

      any assistance is greatly appreciated.

also, my apologies for starting this thread in the wrong area...

        Re: AirCrack-NG Installation

I can't claim great expertise in wireless network testing with aircrack-ng. My little experiments have taught me this much:

        1. First review these tutorials:

        http://www.aircrack-ng.org/doku.php?id=newbie_guide

        http://www.aircrack-ng.org/doku.php?id=getting_started

        http://www.aircrack-ng.org/doku.php?id=injection_test

        2. It only works as root, or with "sudo" prefix. It is a root-user command.

        3. You might as well shut down X with Ctrl-Alt-F1, log in, and issue "sudo service kdm stop" -- otherwise you will find yourself fighting knetwork-manager and dhclient for access to the wireless chip.

So, follow the guidance in the links above to determine whether your wireless chip is supported, and to do the tests, and then to learn how to do the packet injection stuff.

In general, Linux distributions package software to allow successful installation on their target operating system and kernel, and then the packages are made available in "repositories". So, it is always far preferable to install your software packages from the repositories that are set up by default when you install your OS. Useful information on this and other topics are in the "Top 20 FAQs" in the link in my signature.

I hope this helps you get started. Maybe another forum user has more expertise and can help more.
